April 2021 Trucking Marginally Declined

Headline data for the CASS Freight Index show that truck volumes show volumes slowed month-over-month - but the year-over-year growth is now in double digits. In the opposite corner, the American Trucking Association (ATA) index also declined but is finally in expansion now year-over-year.
Analyst Opinion of Truck Transport
The CASS index is inclusive of rail, truck, and air shipments. The ATA truck index is inclusive of only trucking industry member movements (ATA s tonnage data is dominated by contract freight).
I put a heavier weight on the CASS index year-over-year which is more consistent with rail and ocean freight.

(Bloomberg) Drivers encountering fuel shortages in parts of the U.S. East and South may find it takes weeks before supply levels return to normal.
Now that Colonial Pipeline Co. has resumed deliveries that were halted for nearly a week by a cyberattack, the industry is facing a new logistics problem on top of the lack of available fuel: not enough truck drivers to transport gasoline and diesel from distribution hubs to retail outlets.

Closed pipeline shouldn’t lead to gas shortage in N.J., experts say

Two events have drivers concerned about where gas prices are headed: the recent cyberattack that shut down the Colonial Pipeline, which moves gasoline between Gulf Coast refineries and the east coast, and a shortage of drivers qualified to drive tanker trucks.
An expert in global petroleum prices said he is more concerned about the driver shortage than the pipeline, and predicted New Jersey will not see gas shortages because of the pipeline, if people don’t engage in panic buying.
“The driver shortage is real. I’m more worried about that than the pipeline,” said Tom Kloza, Oil Price Information Service global petroleum analyst.
