A Cattle Train by any Other Name The namesake of the Chisholm Trail was not a cattleman.
Jesse Chisholm
Western pioneer Jesse Chisholm is best known for the Texas to Kansas cattle trail that bears his name. And that’s ironic: Jesse never drove cattle in his life.
He was a trader, starting and working various trading posts in the Indian Territory. After the Civil War, Chisholm used an old military and Indian trail that was capable of handling heavy wagons full of goods. But it really didn’t get named until after Jesse died of food poisoning in 1868. And at that point, the route was given his name.

Lincoln County (NM) lawmen had no idea what they were getting themselves into when they chased after rustler Nicholas Aragon in the fall of 1894. He didn’t go quietly. Instead, Aragon shot and killed two of Sheriff John Poe’s (photo) deputies Jasper Corn and John Hurley. Poe and a posse finally trapped the outlaw.
Aragon was convicted in Hurley’s death and sentenced to life in prison but was paroled after 10 years. He reportedly moved back to his ranch and stayed on the right side of the law. Post Views: 147
