Moseneke to evaluate COVID impact on elections The Electoral Commission has appointed former Deputy Chief Justice, Dikgang Moseneke, to lead the process of evaluating the impact of COVID-19 on conditions conducive for free and fair Local Government Elections on 27 October. Making the announcement on Thursday, the IEC said Moseneke will undertake an urgent appraisal of all the relevant legal, socio-political, health, practical and other considerations, and submit a report to the Commission in July. “In addition to assessing the various factors, the report may also make recommendations of additional measures to further fortify the integrity and safety of the elections,” IEC chairperson Glen Mashinini said at a briefing.

Faulty Electricity Billing Latest: 86% say complaints not handled KwaZulu-Natal residents have complained about a high rate of incorrect electricity bills and unread meters in a recent survey. The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to KwaZulu-Natal Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, calling on him to conduct an investigation into the allegedly incorrect and unfair electricity and water billing in the province. DA MPL and spokesperson on CoGTA, Chris Pappas, said a survey of more 770 residents across the province had identified billing as a key challenge, as most municipalities were allegedly failing to provide adequate and fair billing services.

File image NATIONAL NEWS - The Electoral Commission says it is finalising the finer details ahead of the local government elections, now that President Cyril Ramaphosa has set the date for 27 October 2021. Briefing media on Thursday, Chief Electoral Officer, Sy Mamabolo, said the announcement allows the Electoral Commission and all other stakeholders to begin their preparations to ensure South Africa’s sixth municipal council elections are free, fair and safe. Mamabolo said the commission on Thursday met with leaders and representatives of political parties in the National Party Liaison Committee to discuss a range of issues relating to the elections.
