The Hauraki Vintage Machinery Club holds opens day once a year to inform the public more about Kerepehi Flax Mill s history. “It’s a shame Heritage New Zealand can’t see the value of the flax mill,” Hauraki Vintage Machinery Club spokeswoman Heather Spilsbury said. “It’s not about money. We just want that site recognised as a significant site.” In the early 1900s, Hauraki Plains was covered predominately in flax farms, which grew well on its flat, swamp fields. Rather than commuting via horse and cart, workers would travel along the Piako River between mills. Kerepehi Flax Mill – one of three flax mills in the Hauraki Plains – covered more than 500 acres of that land.
