La Crosse s historic buildings at risk of demolition highlighted

Members of the Commission gathered at the location of the former ‘Granite and Marble Works’. The building, which once stood at the corner of 3rd and Cameron Streets south of La Crosse’s downtown, was recently demolished. The building and others are on a list, as they at risk of being demolished or redevelopment due to disrepair, neglect or natural disasters. Commission members say work now can save pieces of the city’s history. “We’re not maintaining them in every case. And we need to encourage where we can people to maintain these properties, because who wants to allow properties like this to just fall into disrepair? It’s not in anyone’s interest,” said La Crosse Heritage Preservation Commission member David Reil.

North Loop tower seeks OK

A proposed 28-story, mixed-use tower on the edge of downtown Minneapolis and the North Loop neighborhood is heading to the Minneapolis Planning Commission after clearing a potential roadblock earlier this year. Chicago developers Harlem Irving Cos. and CA Ventures are leading the project, at 21 N. Washington Ave. and 20 Third St. N. Their plans involved demolishing a building that exists on the Washington Avenue North site, which was considered for historic designation earlier this year. The proposed tower would serve as a bridge for downtown Minneapolis and the city’s North Loop neighborhood, according to a statement from Minneapolis-based ESG Architects included in planning documents filed with the city.

Ely Drop and Shop secondhand store nears reopening

Keith Vandervort ELY – Following a nearly one-month closure, the Ely Drop and Shop secondhand retail shop is taking steps to have their business license reinstated and could soon reopen. The downtown business at 204 E. Sheridan St. was shut down Feb. 11 by the Ely City Council, which pulled the operation’s business license. The closure was triggered by criminal charges against one of the business’s owners for allegedly selling methamphetamines on the premises. Council members voted 6-0 Tuesday night to conditionally reinstate the business license. One council member was absent from the meeting. The resolution stipulates that all current owners must sign the license, and they are all subject to an acceptable background check. The current owners of the business are Kristen Krings, Casey Moravitz, Rosario Thole and Tina Foster.
