St Martin News Network - Samuel must explain public education appointment, says MP Emmanuel

Published: 20 April 2021 PHILIPSBURG: - Independent Member of Parliament Christophe Emmanuel on Tuesday called on Minister of Education Rodolph Samuel to explain his reason behind relieving the local acting Secretary-General of the Department of Public Education of her position and replacing her with a non-St. Maarten national in government service. The MP stressed that he has nothing against the person appointed and does not want his concerns misconstrued as anti-immigrant, but called the situation “yet another example of this government treating St. Maarten people as if they are somehow less capable than others. I am sure the good gentleman is skilled. People come to St. Maarten all the time and are gainfully employed. But this is not about him. This is a St. Maarten issue and the fact that we continuously place less value upon our people,” MP Emmanuel said.

St Martin News Network - MP Emmanuel: Govt must re-asses paying NAf 15 million in property rent

Published: 18 April 2021 PHILIPSBURG: - Independent Member of Parliament Christophe Emmanuel on Sunday said that government paying NAf 15 million a year in property rental is neither tenable nor acceptable in a time when public and private sector workers are being asked to reduce their standard of living by accepting cuts forced upon them. In a time of austerity measures, the MP said, Naf 15 million annually in rent is a gross injustice to the people. Emmanuel’s comments came on the heels of the Audit Chamber’s mini audit on government rental and housing policy. The audit revealed that government in essence does not have a policy that regulates its renting of property. He had already stated last week that the findings in the audit were alarming, but doubled-down on his comments after receiving the actual financial numbers.

The hospital falls under the responsibility of Panneflek, while the Fire Department under the Prime Minister. MP Emmanuel also wants Panneflek to confirm or deny if the board of the SMMC has negotiated a NAf 500,000 “golden handshake” payout to the Director of SMMC Kees Klarenbeek who has been off duty for more than a year due to medical reasons. This “handshake” he said, is being proposed by Klarenbeek’s two closest friends on the board, namely the Chairman of the board Richard Jan James and Jim Rosen.
