Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services has heard that a total of 126 inmates who were paroled have had run-ins with the law since being released.
Officials from the department appeared virtually before parliamentarians on Wednesday, 12 May 2021. The parolees were part of 13 989 other prisoners who were released in 2020, as a measure by government to counter the spread of COVID-19.
The inmates were rearrested for crimes including murder and rape.
