NA puts off debate on expelling French envoy Top Story Ag Agencies ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly (NA) has postponed until Friday a debate on whether the country should expel the French ambassador following government’s negotiations with the banned religious outfit Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). The special session was held on Tuesday after interior minister Sheikh Rashid said in a video message that the government had held talks with the TLP leaders, who agreed to call off the protests after learning a resolution would be discussed in the assembly on the future of the French envoy. During the special session of the National Assembly, the resolution demanding a debate on the issue of expulsion of French ambassador from Pakistan was tabled in the National Assembly. The resolution, moved by Amjid Ali Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) condemned the publication of offensive caricatures by a French magazine in September last year.

When the session started, Amjad Ali Khan – a ruling PTI’s member – took the speaker’s permission to present the resolution though as a private member. The resolution, condemning the publication of blasphemous caricatures by French magazine Charlie Hebdo in September last year, regretted that the French president encouraged the same which hurt the sentiments of the Muslims across the world.

By Muhammad Anis ISLAMABAD: The banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) Tuesday called off its sit-in after successful negotiations with a government team led by Interior Minister Shaikh Rashid Ahmad. The other members of the government team included Religious Affairs Minister Noorul Haq Qadri, adviser to the PM Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi, Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat and officials concerned. Shaikh Rasheed Ahmad, who led the government side during talks with the TLP chief Saad Rizvi, read out the agreement in a tweet Tuesday morning. Shaikh said it was decided that the government would table a resolution in the parliament to decide the issue of expelling the French ambassador.
