ISLAMABAD: The opposition on Thursday blocked the government’s move to present a resolution in the National Assembly authorising the speaker to constitute a parliamentary committee on electoral reforms, saying it would not become part of it without prior consultations and at a time when opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif and others were still in jail.
Amid a noisy protest by opposition members, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan hurriedly read out the complete text of the resolution, but Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri did not put it to vote and directed the government to engage opposition parties and bring it again with consensus.

ISLAMABAD:
The National Assembly was informed on Thursday that the government was procuring raw materials to combat the coronavirus pandemic in sufficient quantity and it was expected that Pakistan would develop its own vaccine against the virus.
The house, which met here with Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri in the chair, deferred the formation of a parliamentary committee on electoral reforms until the opposition parties were consulted on the matter.

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said on Tuesday the government was working on initiation of contempt of court proceedings against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) if it did not tender resignation.
He was briefing the media about the decisions taken at the cabinet meeting here, which met with Prime Minister Imran Khan in the chair after the election of the chairman and deputy chairman of Senate. The minister said consultations were held with the attorney general and they were working on the case that if the ECP chief election commissioner (CEC) and four provincial members did not step down, the government could initiate the contempt of court proceedings against them and also use all available options on that count.
