Under New Policy, Selective Manhattan High Schools Offer More Seats To Students Outside District

The elimination of geographic preferences at one Manhattan school district has led to a skyrocketing number of outerborough students offered seats at the district’s most selective high schools, the city Department of Education said while announcing the results of high school admissions Friday.
“The COVID-19 global pandemic interrupted many of our normal school-year practices last year, including a lack of State testing, and revised approaches to grading and attendance policies,” DOE spokesperson Katie O’Hanlon said in a statement Friday. “In the wake of the health crisis, the City announced common-sense changes to the high school admissions process that were grounded in equity and directly addressed the unprecedented circumstances that families and our school system were and continue to grapple with.”

Five schools in Central New York made the top 100, led by New Hartford Senior High School for the third year in a row. New Hartford ranked No. 67 across the state with a 100% graduation rate and a 59.2 college readiness score.

With schools across the country struggling to provide virtual and limited classroom instruction because of the coronavirus, the issue of middle and high school admissions for next fall in many cities constitutes another formidable challenge. In no city is this challenge greater than in New York, home to the largest public school system in the country by far.
In December, Mayor Bill de Blasio put to rest much confusion by explaining modifications to the calendar for high school admissions and allayed mounting concerns about segregation at middle schools by announcing the termination, for at least one year, of all admissions based on grades and test scores.
