The Parkersburg News and Sentinel published this editorial on June 26: State officials spent a moment Wednesday observing the five-year anniversary of deadly flooding in West Virginia. The rushing water took 23 lives, destroyed businesses and left hundreds of families without a safe place to live. In the wake of the tragedy, the need was so great entire new levels of bureaucracy were created … which subsequently had to be reined in and put back on track by the West Virginia National Guard. Politicians issued somber but inspiring statements to mark the anniversary. U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., for example, had this to say:

The suspect, Rufus James Ramsey III, 34, was found outside his apartment still armed with what Martin described as “basically a meat cleaver. Martin told The Parkersburg News and Sentinel that Ramsey initially dropped the weapon, but then picked it up and rushed at an officer, who shot him.

A man is dead after being shot and killed by a Parkersburg police officer Sunday afternoon at Oakwood Village apartments. Parkersburg Police Chief Joe Martin said the officer fired at Rufus Ramsey III, 34, of Parkersburg, after Ramsey allegedly rushed at the officer with a meat cleaver. Martin says Ramsey had previously stabbed a female neighbor at the apartment complex with the weapon. She is hospitalized. Martin said the investigation has been turned over to state police. Chief Martin told the Parkersburg News and Sentinel newspaper Sunday it appears the officer followed proper procedure.

Chamber member businesses have been encouraged to offer specials that day or sponsor a drawing for a gift certificate or card usable at their location. Shoppers should watch for special Shop Small/Shop Local signs in front of Belpre Area retail sites on May Madness Saturday, Waller said.
