Slovene Writersâ Association has 308 members. Very few writers (not all of them are members of the Slovene Writersâ Association) can live merely off what they create. They are supported by certain social mechanisms, from giving public lending rights payments whenever their books are borrowed from a library, to work and creative bursaries, all of which relieve their economic situation, but the majority of authors are freelancers or work in other jobs, often making literary creativity their parallel activity.
Translators from Slovene provide quality translations into all major world languages, however there is a certain lack of direct translators into some languages with relatively large and translation-interested book markets such as, for example, Turkish or some Scandinavian languages. To this end, this week Tamara Weingerl Požar, deputy permanent representative of Slovenia to the EU (COREPER I), presented copies of Drago Jančar’s book
To noč sem jo videl (I Saw Her That Night) in English, French, or German translations to her colleagues as a gift. In addition, she presented the cultural-promotional project Europe Readr.
Europe Readr is a project initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia on the occasion of the upcoming Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in July 2021 and realised in cooperation with EUNIC. Europe Readr aims to foster reading culture and critical thinking across societies about the future of living, support the creation of public spaces for exchange and debate on shared European values, dialogue on the European Green Deal, sustainability and urbanism through a curated programme of activities.

Ljubljana – Drago JanÄar, arguably Slovenia’s leading contemporary writer, has been nominated for this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature. He was nominated by the Slovenian Writers’ Association (DSP), the Slovenian PEN centre and the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU).
DSP head Dušan Merc confirmed media reports for the STA that the nomination had been filed recently together with a three-page expert argumentation in English.
In recent years, JanÄar has been alternating with Boris Pahor as Slovenian candidate for the prize. “But now we estimate that JanÄar is our representative and author best known in the world,” Merc said.
