Arrests, Inmate Population Down on the Cape During the Pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has touched all facets of life, and the criminal justice system is no exception.    Arrests and criminal citations filed in the Cape’s two largest district courts are down by more than 20 percent in 2020, when the pandemic began.        The inmate population at the Barnstable County House of Corrections is down over 200 inmates from what it typically averages.    The reasons for the changes vary, from people staying off the streets because of the Governor’s emergency order to sheriff’s releasing inmates who may be at risk for the coronavirus and nearing the end of the sentence.    In Barnstable District Court, there were 2,264 criminal arrests and summonses for 2020. There are typically about 2,800 at the Cape’s largest district courthouse. In 2019 there were 2,723; in 2018, there was 2,823, a difference of about 20 percent compared to 2020.
