Memorial garden opens in teen s memory | Barnsley Chronicle

× A MEMORIAL garden dedicated to bereaved families as a place to remember children was officially opened on Saturday after more than £10,000 was raised in memory of a Mapplewell schoolboy. Darton Academy pupil Lucas Fleetwood died aged 14 and had congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA) - a rare condition that only affects just one in every 200,000 people. Lucas’ parents, Daniel and Stacey Fleetwood, decided they wanted a less traditional resting place for their son and so after contacting Barnsley Council’s bereavement services, they worked to develop a memorial garden within Barnsley Crematorium’s grounds where families can go to remember their loved ones.

Tributes paid to long-serving doctor

× TRIBUTES have been paid to a ‘selfless’ former doctor at Barnsley Hospital after he died surrounded by his friends and family. Dr John Bridson, 80, died of septicemia and bladder cancer just after midnight last Tuesday at his Wombwell home. John worked at Barnsley Hospital as lead paediatrician from 1976 until he retired in 2000. It wasn’t just residents across the borough who John helped - he was also worked in field hospitals during the Kosovo crisis and he helped to cure hypothyroidism in Albania. His wife, 71-year-old Jenny, has previously spoke poignantly about his dementia diagnosis in 2014 - but admits they knew that something was wrong in the years leading up.

Lucas memory to live on in memorial garden | Barnsley Chronicle

× A DEDICATED area for bereaved families to remember children is being added to Barnsley Crematorium following fundraising efforts in memory of a Mapplewell teenager. Darton Academy pupil Lucas Fleetwood died aged 14 and had congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA) - a rare condition that only affects just one in every 200,000 people. He went to bed healthy after school on September 6, 2019 but tragically never woke up. Lucas had just returned from a family holiday in Majorca and had enjoyed showing his younger brother, Oliver, around his new school that day. His parents, Daniel and Stacey Fleetwood, of Brattice Way, decided they wanted a less traditional resting place.
