A proposed law that would allow the port to flex new development powers remained in discussions Friday, days after a tense hearing on the state stage.
At its crux: whether the Port of Corpus Christi Authority should be allowed to broaden its development options beyond what is now permitted under state law – solely development to facilitate navigational and maritime commerce.
The distinct lines of how the bill is perceived were well-illustrated in a committee hearing at the Texas House of Representatives on Tuesday.
On one side, proponents have pointed to the bill as an opportunity for new port investment, promoted as a means to diversify the port s portfolio as well as benefit specific economically disadvantaged areas.
Nueces County pivots from large COVID-19 vaccine sites as supply grows
Nueces County will soon pivot from large COVID-19 vaccination hubs to smaller sites as supply of the shots continues to grow.
One of those smaller sites is a new clinic at La Palmera, across from Grimaldi’s, which launched last Tuesday and is open during mall hours 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
In the clinic’s first week, more than 4,000 people have been vaccinated, public health director Annette Rodriguez told the Caller-Times.
County commissioners on Tuesday approved a 30-day, $10,000 lease with La Palmera during their meeting Tuesday. County Judge Barbara Canales said the county will decide whether to stay at the site longer.
La Palmera to host standing COVID-19 vaccine clinic
A standing COVID-19 vaccine clinic at La Palmera and a program to vaccinate homeless people are in the works, Corpus Christi and Nueces County officials said Thursday.
The La Palmera clinic will launch Tuesday and will be open Monday through Sunday during regular mall hours, public health director Annette Rodriguez said during the city and county’s weekly COVID-19 briefing.
People can pre-register or register on site, Rodriguez said. Officials hope to have at least 100 doses available every day.
To pre-register, visit cctexas.com/vaccineregistration or call 361-561-1101.
The clinic will be in the former Charming Charlie location near Grimaldi’s, Rodriguez said.
NUECES COUNTY, Texas The Nueces County Commissioners Court will soon be receiving the bids for the debris removal and demolition of Bob Hall Pier. The County had an engineering firm look at the structure of the pier after Hurricane Hanna hit in 2020.
After that engineering report, the County decided to go ahead and completely rebuild the pier. Now, it looks like the tear down of the structure will begin soon. The court has prioritized $18 million for Bob Hall Pier s renovation and reconstruction so very, very exciting, Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales said. We still have lots of work to do from an engineering and design point of view and that work on the parking lot will also begin very soon on design.
