Throughout most of New England, the distinction between towns and cities is based on their form of government, not their size or population. New Hampshire can thank the glaciers for the abundance of lakes that spread across the landscape, left as the ice receded and melted more than 15,000 years ago. The state officially lists 944 lakes, 17 of them larger than 1000 acres. The largest of all, Lake Winnipesaukee, covers more than 44,000 acres.
In choosing the 10 lakes to include, considerations such as access, aesthetics, and activities were more important than size. NH has several larger lakes, including Ossipee Lake and Massabesic, which are not on this list. Some are lined by private cottages and have no public access or beaches; others are public water supplies that do not permit swimming, or otherwise limit public use.

December 16, 2020FRANCONIA The Franconia ArtWalk recently caught the attention of travel writer Barbara Radcliffe Rogers while she was a guest at the Adair Country Inn in Bethlehem. The discovery resulted in an article for NH Magazine that Executive Director Bob Montagno said caught him by surprise. That whole thing was kind of amazing because it was completely unsolicited. I knew nothing about the article until someone told me about it after it had been published, stated Montagno. The people at the Adair sent them over to take a look at the Artwalk because they wanted something to do. Obviously, they were pretty impressed with what they saw, added Montagno.
