JANESVILLE
What started out as a peaceful Thanksgiving dinner quickly took a violent turn after a Janesville man became intoxicated and battered a woman before setting fire to a home on Nov. 26, 2020.
Joshua A. Kaster, 29, was sentenced Wednesday in Rock County Court to four years of probation and one year of conditional jail time by Judge John Wood.
Kaster pleaded guilty to one count of arson and one count of disorderly conduct domestic abuse. Charges of taking a vehicle without consent, criminal damage to property, battery and an additional disorderly conduct count were dropped as part of a plea agreement between the defense and Rock County District Attorneyâs Office.
A Town of Rock man who originally faced more than two dozen counts of possession of child pornography was sentenced to probation after the charges were reduced.

A jury will decide the fate of two suspects in a Beloit triple shooting.
32-year-old Gregory Carter and 28-year-old Anthony Sims are both charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety for the shooting that killed 21-year-old Treron White of Beloit.
Neither man is charged with homicide, but Beloit police believe they were the two shooters present when White was killed and two others were injured in March of 2019.
Rock County Judge Barbara McCrory denied a motion on Friday from Carter’s attorney Jeff Purnell that would have delayed the trial, which begins Monday morning with jury selection.
Purnell raised concerns about Carter’s ability to assist in his own defense because of the medications he takes to treat his cancer that has spread to his lungs, brain and spine.
