VIRGINIA â This is a milestone year â both locally and globally â for the volunteer organization known as Soroptimist.
The Virginia Soroptimist Club, the only remaining one in northeastern Minnesota, is celebrating its 65th anniversary of helping to improve the lives of women and girls in the community â something it has been doing since it was chartered in 1956.
Soroptimist International, formed in 1921 in Oakland, California, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Launched at a time when until then women were not permitted to join service organizations, the global entity now has about 160,000 members and supporters in 21 countries and territories worldwide.
While most people have heard of the Soroptimist organization, many are not exactly sure what it does, say members of the Virginia club, who range in age from 30 to 90.

My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord,
Sexual Assault Awareness Month, observed each April, is a campaign that aims to increase awareness about the causes and risk factors for sexual assault, empower individuals to take steps to prevent it in their communities, and especially to inform minors of ways to be aware of sexual abuse and how they can protect themselves.
Unfortunately, sex abuse has always been a societal issue. As we have seen in the last 20 years, the Church has been made aware of the sexual abuse by those in its own ranks. We must look forward, however, in finding ways to prevent sexual abuse, especially in institutions. As we know, the Boy Scouts of America had over 96,000 cases of sexual abuse and this entity declared bankruptcy.

Do you remember when Al Franken resigned from Congress? A photo came to light (distributed by the subject of that photo who disagreed with Franken politically), in which Franken, a sitting Congressman, is making a joking gesture about touching the body of a sleeping woman. He’s not actually touching her, but his hands hover above her and it is clear from his smile that he and all those around him consider this a hilarious prank. When this photo surfaced and stories from a checkered past began to emerge, Al Franken was, let’s say, strongly encouraged to resign.
