AUSTIN â Gov. Greg Abbott this week issued a proclamation recognizing April 2021 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Texas.
This month is a time for Texans to come together to build awareness around the issue of sexual assault and to recognize the courage of survivors throughout our nation and across the Lone Star State, according to a release from the governor s office. Texans are encouraged to honor survivors as the State of Texas continues its mission to encourage healing and empowerment for survivors of sexual violence. Texans can also use the hashtag #TXSexualAssaultAwarenessMonth to share their support on social media.Â

Eastern Connecticut State University hires firm to conduct independent review of its handling of Title IX claims

WINDHAM, Conn. Eastern Connecticut State University has hired a consulting firm to conduct a review of how the school handles Title IX claims. The president of the university, Elsa Nuñez, said the firm will be looking into the school s policy and procedures, which are the same across all 17 Connecticut state colleges and universities.
TNG Strategic Risk Management Solutions will be looking into whether or not the school handles reports of sexual assault appropriately.
The Center for Advocacy, Response and Education is hosting events throughout April to raise awareness of the impact of sexual assault and show support for sexual assault survivors.
This year is the 20th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Melissa Wilkerson, victim advocate for Student Affairs, said the month focuses on activities that teach sexual assault awareness and ways to get involved in sexual assault prevention.
Lanie Stutz, victim advocate for Student Affairs, said the âWhat Were You Wearing?â Survivor Art Installation showcases various sexual assault survivor stories by displaying clothing that tries to replicate the clothing of survivors when they were sexually assaulted.

Instead, more people in the region found themselves sexually assaulted than in 2019, with a 20% increase in the number of sexual violence survivors served by Crime Victim Services, said Ryn Farmer, director of Day One of Crime Victim Services.
