The Desert Winds Freedom Band, a 501(c )(3) nonprofit, is a large and diverse community musical group based in Palm Springs. Founded by Gary Moline in 2001 with just 17 members, the band has grown, both in membership and concert attendance. Now in its 19th season, the band boasts more than 80 members. Local high school students chosen to participate in virtual graduation ceremony with Vice President Harris Published Four high school students from the 36 th Congressional District were selected by the White House to participate in a virtual graduation ceremony with Vice President Kamala Harris. Palm Springs area students take part in White House s high school graduation

Around 300 high school seniors across the country were selected to virtually attend a White House graduation ceremony that took place this week with Vice President Kamala Harris. Four of them are students from Riverside County. Ariana Castañeda-Gutierrez, Omar Bahena, Elizabeth Esteban and Emma Hernandez each found out they would be part of the Graduation 2021: A CNN Special Event  just two days prior to the ceremony held on May 18. Some of them said they did not immediately know what the event was or that Harris would be the keynote speaker.  Hernandez, who attends Beaumont High School, said someone from her school district initially asked her if she would like to be part of a special project.

Coachella Valley Alumnae Panhellenic distributes annual scholarships

The Coachella Valley Alumnae Panhellenic (CVAP) met Thursday, May 13, 2021, via Zoom to distribute their annual scholarships to 18 area high school seniors. These young women were selected based on their academic, extra-curricular and volunteer activities and were awarded between $2,350 and $3,350 to assist them with their first-year college expenses. Distributed annually since 1954, the goal of the CVAP Scholarship Fund is to give outstanding graduating seniors some preliminary financial support to pursue and realize their college dreams. The CVAP recipients will be attending universities throughout the country in the fall. Many have selected schools within the University of California system. They will be pursuing a wide variety of degrees and majors, including climate engineering, sports medicine, music industry management and immigration law.
