Milk Marketing Board Submits Final Rule for Dropping Dairy Contracts

A Pennsylvania dairy regulator on Wednesday submitted its final rule that would require buyers to give 90 days’ notice before canceling a dairy farm’s contract. The state regulatory review board will consider the rule on June 17, Milk Marketing Board counsel Doug Eberly said. The current minimum notice for a processor to drop a farm is 28 days. The board began working on the regulation in 2018 following a petition from the Pennsylvania Ag Department. Dean Foods shed contracts with 42 dairies in the state that year. Though the company gave 90 days’ notice, longer than was required, most of the farms took longer than 28 days to find new markets.
