Whanganui Collegiate School s senior debating team has claimed first place in the Central North Island championships. WCS Gold, made up of year 12 and 13 students Mia Perkins, Elliott Jones, Bridget Jones Long and John Bryant, beat Palmerston North Boys High School in the final on Sunday.
Year 12 head and debating coach Costas Thrasyvoulou said it was the first time a Collegiate team had taken the top spot since 2006 and this year s competition was the largest he could remember.
Rojenabibi Asmat Ali, 9, with a biscuit she decorated at the New Kiwi Club. With a group of volunteers from Palmerston North Girls’ High School keeping a watchful eye, children tear around playing sport, cooking or singing. Everyone is welcome, but many of the children are from refugee families, so a lot of the activities are new to them. They soon get stuck into typical activities for Kiwi kids: making art, hunting through the strawberry patch or skipping. The group was started by Jasmine Glentworth, Palmerston North Girls’ High School’s head girl in 2020, her mum Kathy, Te Aroha Noa s Ashleigh Couper, and Jenny Pepworth from Red Cross.
Hannah Cadzow had a successful day, winning the junior girls’ 100m, 200m, 400m and long jump. As expected, one of the country’s leading young athletes, Monique Gorrie, dominated the intermediate grade sprints, winning the 100m, 200m and 400m races, setting a new school record in her heat of the 200m. Her younger sister Brianna finished second in the 100m and 200m. Amber Trow was another to set a school record with her 1.64m clearance in the intermediate high jump. She also won the 80m hurdles. Alice Cook was another to impress, winning the long and triple jump. Janae Laing completed the school’s impressive lineup of talent in the intermediate grade, with big wins in the discus and shot put.
