She had surgery at Palmerston North on November 23, but that failed, so she went back on February 3 for another operation, spending two weeks in hospital. The problem with food meant that by time she had the surgery her weight had dropped to about 48 kilos. Taranaki District Health Board (TDHB) does not have enough Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeons and has been struggling to employ more because there is a national shortage.

But back in the 1950s and 1960s, at No 89, there was a previous dairy. The dairy closed and other businesses took its place. My mother had eight babies and being the oldest I can remember many visits to the hospital between 1956 and 1964. We used to go into the dairy to get her a magazine, some flowers and anything else she needed. I also remember the cake shop on the corner.
