Livestock owners urged to register with Premises ID | Columbia Valley, Cranbrook, East Kootenay, Elk Valley, Kimberley, Ktunaxa Nation

Posted: July 3, 2021 Livestock owners urged to register with Premises ID As B.C. faces the risk of an extreme wildfire season in 2021, ranchers and livestock operators are urged to register with the Premises Identification (ID) program. The program helped about 200 ranchers access their animals in evacuation zones and saved the lives of hundreds of animals during the devastating wildfire season of 2017. “We experienced the hottest temperature ever recorded in Canada this week, the forests are dry and the risk of wildfires is very, very real,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “Having a Premises ID helped B.C. ranchers protect their animals during the intense wildfires of 2017 and 2018, and it could help you this year too.”

Mandatory Premises ID regulation on its way | Columbia Valley, Cranbrook, East Kootenay, Elk Valley, Kimberley, Ktunaxa Nation

Posted: February 6, 2021 Mandatory Premises ID regulation on its way After consulting with B.C.’s farming and ranching community, the province is moving forward with a mandatory Premises Identification (ID) regulation to help livestock producers and communities better prepare for emergencies and be equipped to respond to them. “B.C. farmers and ranchers have been clear that a new regulation to trace their animals is needed, and we are listening,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “Rapid access to information is key in an emergency, and Premises ID was invaluable during the 2017 wildfires. When the new regulation is in place, it will include mandatory registration so we can effectively support industry in responding to both animal health and environmental emergencies affecting livestock and poultry.”
