CHATHAM, Va. â On Monday, June 21, Chatham Town Council voted as one in a special meeting in order to approve the town budget for the 2021-2022 fiscal year.
Unlike budgets before, the townâs new budget will run a decent deficit of over $200,000; a rare occurrence for Chatham.Â
The total budget will amount to $3,113,541.12, which is more than a $250,000 increase from the previous yearâs budget.
The $205,426.12 deficit comes from $60,000 due to inflation, $80,000 taken from town reserves, $25,000 used for a Pittsylvania County Service Authority (PCSA) meter and about $40,000 has been devoted to an upgrade in town computer technology.
The general understanding of why the town will be running a deficit rather than a surplus is because of COVID-19. The pandemic s effect to the people of Chatham is not only health related but financially related as well, and COVID-19 has hindered the ability of townspeople to keep up with town bills such as utilities. HURT, Va. â Hurt Town Council held a called meeting Tuesday, May 18, primarily for the purpose of hearing updates and considering bids on Phase I of a two-phase capital improvement project for its municipal water system that has been planned for some time.Â
Peed & Bortz LLC, a firm based in Christiansburg specializing in civil engineering work, along with Altavista Director of Public Utilities Tom Fore, discussed with Council the recent project details, including bids submitted, and recommendations going forward.Â
Consulting Engineer C. Elvan Peed reported that a consent order for the project has been received from Virginia Department of Health (VDH), and that VDH has access to a number of funding sources to assist localities with the costs of such projects.Â
