No more deaths in Danville : VCU, PATHS tackle racial disparity in cancer screening

DANVILLE, Va. — Through a budding partnership between Piedmont Access to Health Services (PATHS) and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Massey Cancer Center Director Dr. Robert Winn is on a mission to make Danville healthier by addressing racial disparities systemic in screening of preventable cancers. During a seminar Thursday afternoon in the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History auditorium, public health and community leaders from Danville, Pittsylvania County and Richmond engaged in a meeting of the minds as they discussed Project COALESCE, a two-year collaborative effort funded by Pfizer and the American Cancer Society to address race-related barriers to colorectal and cervical cancer screening in Danville, Martinsville, Brunswick and Richmond.

Gretna vaccination clinic to close next week

GRETNA, Va. — After approximately two months of serving as a central vaccine hub for Pittsylvania County, the Gretna Community Vaccination Clinic will be shut down after its last clinic May 20. A decline in demand for the vaccine combined with more widespread access across our county led to the decision to close the clinic.   We were very pleased with the role the Gretna Community Vaccination Clinic played in providing so many of our residents the opportunity to get vaccinated, said Pittsylvania County Administrator David Smitherman. We think that the clinic served its purpose in making vaccinations, from scheduling the appointment to actually getting the shot, convenient for people in Pittsylvania County.

First vaccine clinic held in county serves more than 700 citizens

RINGGOLD, Va. — The Cherrystone Missionary Baptist Association in Ringgold held the area’s third large-scale vaccine clinic and the first held in Pittsylvania County on Saturday, where more than 700 residents received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination. Through a partnership between the Virginia Department of Health, Sovah Health, Averett University, Danville Community College, 16 vaccinators provided vaccines for those who pre-registered from 12 p.m to 5 p.m. To increase accessibility for those most at risk, including those in rural areas and in black communities, where COVID-19 has had most impact, Pittsylvania Danville Health Director Dr. Scott Spillmann said Saturday’s event was an effort to bridge the gap in access.
