Passenger killed, driver seriously injured after crashing into trees near Ann Arbor Updated Jan 13, 2021; PITTSFIELD TWP., MI – A woman is dead, and a man was seriously injured in a crash with several trees along Michigan Avenue in Pittsfield Township south of Ann Arbor. Joni Schanck, 20, of Ypsilanti Township, was killed early Wednesday morning, Jan. 13. She was the passenger in a vehicle that left the roadway and struck a tree, according to the Pittsfield Township Police Department. Emergency crews were called at 3:34 a.m. to the area of Michigan Avenue and Sauk Trail near Platt Road for a reported single vehicle crash, police said.

According the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner’s Office there were 12 reported homicides in 2020 as of Dec. 28. The 12 homicides reported by the medical examiner’s office are more than the nine homicides local law enforcement agencies released information about in 2020. The discrepancy is unclear. The medical examiner’s office denied a Freedom of Information Act request to release additional information about the deaths, including the names of the victims.

Man accused of sexually assaulting teen at Walmart heads to trial Updated Dec 15, 2020; WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – A man accused of sexually assaulting a teen at an Ann Arbor-area Walmart is heading to trial. Antonio Suava McClaster, 30, of Inkster, was bound over for trial Tuesday, Dec. 15, after waiving his right to preliminary examination before district Judge Kirk Tabbey. McClaster was arraigned Nov. 20 on two sexual misconduct charges stemming from the sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl at the Pittsfield Township Walmart, 7000 E. Michigan Ave., court records show. He heads to trial charged with one count each of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.
