HELSINKI, March 17 (Xinhua) Demand in Finland s travel industry is not expected to reach the 2019 level until 2023 at the earliest, the Finnish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment said in a report published on Wednesday.
The ongoing travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic are projected to slow down the sector s recovery, noted the report produced jointly with Statistics Finland and travel organizations.
In 2021, tourist consumption is expected to decrease by 40-50 percent in Finland. Even if recovery in tourism begins in late summer, consumption will still fall by about 40 percent, or more than six billion euros (7.15 billion U.S. dollars). However, if recovery does not start until the winter season of 2021-2022, consumption will decline by about 50 percent, or about eight billion euros, the ministry estimated.

Partially used irradiated fuel from the Finnish Reactor 1 (FiR1) in Espoo, Finland, has been transported to the USA for use in a TRIGA Mark I research reactor operated by the US Geological Survey in Denver, Colorado. Dismantling of the Finnish reactor, which was shut down in 2015, is scheduled to begin at the end of 2022.

The fuel, purchased by Finland in the 1960s and 1970s, still has a remarkable remaining utility value , VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland said. The USGS required additional fuel to continue operating its reactor, but the production of suitable fuel has been suspended for several years.
