The mass vaccination site operated at the Colorado State Fairgrounds will close on June 14, having administered thousands of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine doses during its tenure.
The site was first opened by the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment on March 22, transitioning from the previous mass vaccination site at the former Sears auto shop in the Pueblo Mall. The former auto shop was turned into the mass testing site when vaccination operations were transferred to the fairgrounds, which had been where testing was originally conducted.
Sarah Joseph, communications director for the Pueblo Health Department, said the department s administrators are grateful that there are so many opportunities in Pueblo County that they do not feel the need to continue a mass vaccination site once FEMA leaves.
The federal mass COVID vaccination site at the Colorado State Fairgrounds in Pueblo wraps up June 14 after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) began operation in mid-April.
Vaccine site at Colorado State Fairgrounds closing on June 14
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) The COVID-19 vaccine distribution site at the Colorado State Fairgrounds in Pueblo will be closing in a few weeks.
The Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment made the announcement Tuesday, saying the site will close for good on June 14. The site will still offer first and second doses until then, according to Public Health, but any second doses scheduled after June 14 will need to be administered by another provider.
Since opening, however, the clinic has seen dwindling turnout. In late April, KRDO reported that even on its busiest day, the clinic only reached about two-thirds of its capacity. Many days saw just several hundred patients visit for vaccine shots. A representative with FEMA said a likely reason for the low turnout at the State Fairgrounds clinic was the number of options for getting a vaccine in Pueblo County.
