The Peoria County Sheriff s Office is warning the public about an increase in COVID-19 scammers trying to swindle people in the Peoria area.
Aimee Shinall, the victim service coordinator with the sheriff s office, said legitimate contact tracers will only ask for certain personal information.
“They re going to be asking for the name, they re going to be asking for your date of birth. They will not be asking you for your Social Security Number,” said Shinall. “They will not be telling you that it s going to charge you anything, asking you for a gift card or any kind of payment.”

57-year-old Kent Hamm was found Wednesday in the 1700 block of Holiday Harbor Lane.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says it appears Hamm fell outside, and for unknown reasons, was unable to get back up. Harwood says Hamm died of cold exposure.
CHILLICOTHE (WEEK) - A man who s been missing for a week was found dead Wednesday on his own property, according to the Peoria County Sheriff s Office.
Sheriff Brian Asbell said detectives found Kent Hamm s body at Hamm s Holiday Harbor, a boat marina along the Illinois River, just east of Three Sisters Park.
Hamm, 57, was last seen January 20 at the Shell Gas Station on East Knox Street in Chillicothe.
