PEORIA A new surge of COVID-19 in the Tri-County Area is showing a troubling trend, with an uptick in cases affecting those younger than 45.
“The illness that we are seeing is now trending to a younger population, said Monica Hendrickson, administrator of the Peoria City/County Health Department, during the weekly COVID-19 news briefing Thursday. “The majority of our cases are sitting in a younger-age population. That means 0- to 19-year-old population.”
Forty percent of current active cases in the Peoria area are people under the age of 30. And 20% of those currently hospitalized for COVID-19 are under 45, she said.
Only about 2,800 Peoria County residents under 30 are fully vaccinated, a number that should rise in coming weeks. Anyone over 16 is now eligible for a vaccine shot, given that the availability of shots is growing in the area.
Bradley University will offer two days of COVID-19 vaccine clinics for students next Monday and Tuesday.
The university s health services department received 1,000 Moderna doses from the Peoria City/County Health Department for distribution on campus.
Clinics will be held in the Markin Center Performance Court from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on April 12 and 13.
Second doses will be administered the week of May 10, shortly before students head off for summer break.
Local health officials say the recent surge in COVID-19 cases is concentrated among younger people, particularly those age 19 and younger. The COVID-19 positivity rate on the Bradley campus as of Thursday was 3.62%.
