Lassa fever in Nigeria: Promising results from a new study will improve the quality of care Format Results of the largest prospective cohort study ever conducted on Lassa fever, known as LASCOPE (LASsa fever clinical COurse and Prognostic factors in an Epidemic context in Nigeria), which was conducted by a research team from ALIMA (The Alliance for International Medical Action) and its partners, have been published in The Lancet, one of the most prestigious, peer-reviewed medical journals. Lassa fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever that is usually transmitted to humans from the infected urine or feces of the Mastomys rat. Human-to-human transmission is also possible, via contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person. Symptoms of the disease include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, sore throat and hemorrhaging. In severe cases, organ failure can lead to death.
