ND legislative committee talks recreational marijuana

By Doug Barrett Feb 4, 2021 2:55 PM A Bismarck lawmaker says he introduced a measure to legalize recreational marijuana because he wanted to head off the effort to put an initiated Constitutional measure on the ballot. Republican Representative Jason Dockter of Bismarck told the House Human Services Committee – his will be allow up to one ounce of marijuana. And he says his measure has other safeguards – including how it can be sold. Dockter says a companion bill now in the House Finance and Taxation Committee would set tax rates for recreational marijuana. The committee did not take immediate action.

ND Lawmakers Introduce Marijuana Legalization Bill

(Bismarck, ND)    North Dakota lawmakers are considering joint bills to legalize recreational marijuana and tax it.  Representative Jason Dockter introduced a bill in the House Human Services Committee yesterday that would legalize but restrict recreational marijuana.  Representative Craig Headland introduced a bill at the same time to the House Finance and Taxation Committee that would set a tax policy for recreational marijuana.  The two lawmakers say they oppose legalization but believe it will happen and should be done in a controlled way.

GOP Lawmakers Backing Marijuana Legalization Bill Despite Opposing Idea

(Bismarck, ND)    Some North Dakota GOP lawmakers are backing a marijuana legalization bill despite opposing the idea.  Republicans say legalization is likely to happen in the state, and they want the Legislature to set the terms.  Representative Jason Dockter is the prime sponsor of a bill that would legalize recreational use of the drug in North Dakota, and says he believes the Legislature should be proactive about the idea.
