FRANKLIN, Va. - A Franklin High School senior has been accepted into 40 colleges and offered more than $1.6 million in scholarships.
Sam Lyons, 18, began sending out college applications in August 2020 and might still receive more scholarship money or acceptance letters, according to Franklin High School guidance counselor Ale Massenburg. Some of the schools Lyons has been accepted to so far include the University of Richmond, George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University and Ferrum College. It was very time-consuming. I had to manage my time while applying to so many schools and doing virtual learning, Lyons said. âI didnât really know what to expect since it was my first time applying to colleges. I didn t expect to get offered so much in scholarship money.â
Smiles came easily for Kelly Holmes May 4 during her brief visit to Canton High School s softball field, the place where in 1992 she struck out a still-standing national record 24 batters in a seven-inning game. Whenever I go by a softball field, I remember the smell of the freshly-cut grass, the dirt, everything, said Holmes, who was inducted into the Canton High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018. Being here brings back a lot of great memories.
In April 2020, Holmes, who starred as a pitcher for the University of Michigan s softball program for four years after graduating from Canton in 1993, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an incurable form of brain cancer.

During the early months of quarantine last year, after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis ignited protests and calls for change across the country, friends Devin Anglin and Rashad Smith had a benign conversation in Rochester about cycling.
“The George Floyd protests were rampant at that time … and we were like, ‘Yo, we should just get out and ride our bikes,’” Anglin said.
And it just so happened that the upcoming Saturday was Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. It marks the June 19, 1865 announcement that ended slavery in Texas. Jubilees in celebration of Black emancipation have widely existed across the South, and in recent years, Juneteenth has become a more mainstream holiday nationwide.
