Bill Seitz, Ohio Clean Energy Foe, at Forefront of HB6 Bailout Ratification and Defense

as this helps us provide more public service reporting. Documents made available last week show how House Majority Floor Leader Bill Seitz, R-Cincinnati, championed gutting Ohio’s clean energy standards in the state’s 2019 coal and nuclear bailout law. He has since served as a force against repeal. Claims in a federal complaint released in July indicate that the law was at the heart of an alleged corruption scheme involving roughly $60 million. Former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder, R-Glenford, and others were arrested last summer. Failure to repeal the law in 2020 was “an astounding failure by Republican leadership,” said Rep. David Leland, D-Columbus, as the legislature adjourned last month.

Ohio House Fails To Take Any Action On Nuclear Bailout Law

1:03 When it comes to HB6, the nuclear bailout law connected to a racketeering investigation, House Speaker Bob Cupp (R-Lima) has gone from saying the House will find a way to repeal and/or replace the law, to wanting more discussion on the issue, to saying the House ran out of time to come to a consensus. That was in the span of five months. Now it appears the House will finish the legislative session without making a single change to HB6. Cupp says he wants to revisit the issue in the new year. HB6 creates new charges on electric bills for a $1 billion nuclear power plant bailout, in addition to subsidizing coal plants and scrapping the state s green energy standards. But federal investigators allege the bailout is the result of quid-pro-quo between a utility alleged to be FirstEnergy and former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder.

Franklin County Judge Blocks Nuclear Bailout Fees From Kicking In

Ron Schwane / Associated Press A Franklin County judge has granted a preliminary injunction that blocks the owner of Ohio s two nuclear power plants from collecting fees as part of HB6, the controversial bailout law at the center of a federal racketeering investigation. At a hearing Monday, Franklin County Court of Common Pleas Judge Chris Brown granted a preliminary injunction to halt Energy Harbor, formerly known as FirstEnergy Solutions, from collecting increased fees from ratepayers. To not impose an injunction would be to allow certain parties to prevail, Brown said. It would give the O.K. that bribery is allowed in the state of Ohio and that any ill-gotten gains can be received.
