Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that people have been invited to stand at their doorsteps to ‘Clap for Captain Tom’ at 6pm tonight. The Keighley-born World War Two veteran united the nation when he raised a record-breaking £33 million for the NHS by walking 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday at the start of the pandemic. His family confirmed his death on Tuesday after contracting Covid-19. They will be taking part in the national tribute, tweeting: Earlier, a social media campaign had suggested tomorrow night to hold the national round of applause, but this has been brought forward to tonight instead.
