Revealed: Sneak peek of Northern Australia budget projects

The Federal Government has announced millions of dollars in funding for regional connectivity projects across Australia, which will be part of the upcoming budget to be revealed on Tuesday. Making the announcement at Beef Australia in Rockhampton on Thursday, May 6, Minister for Northern Australia Keith Pitt said $190 million would go toward funding the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) along corridors from Townsville to Mount Isa, Gladstone to Cairns, Darwin to Kununurra, and Darwin to the Beetaloo Basin. Mr Pitt also announced $9 million would be focused on a pilot program on those corridors for the projects. “We have to ensure that Northern Australia is connected to the world, and it is this government that is delivering to the north,” he said.

Credit: ID 86533115 © Semisatch | Dreamstime.com The federal government is planning to spend nearly $1.2 billion on its Digital Economy Strategy and $130.4 million for improved regional connectivity as part of the upcoming 2021-22 Budget.  Scheduled to be released in its entirety from 11 May in the approaching Budget, the strategy is broadly set to offer investment towards emerging technologies, building digital skills, encouraging business investment opportunities and upgrading government service delivery.  Headlining the technology spend is expected to be over $500 million for government services enhancements, with $301.8 million to go towards My Health Record and the expansion of the digital identity system and $200.1 million to overhaul the online government services portal myGov.

Telstra CEO Andrew Penn said the co-investment fund would run over the next four years and was aimed at enhancing and extending mobile coverage through stimulating infrastructure co-investment with governments, local councils and businesses in areas that would otherwise be difficult to justify on economic grounds. “We have seen great success from this type of approach in the past, with Telstra investing over $120 million in such projects over the last few years,” said Penn.

QCN Fibre has been awarded Australian Government funding under the Regional Connectivity Program for solutions in Bluff, Duaringa, and Dingo. The funding allows QCN Fibre, in partnership with Retail Service Provider MarchNet, to deliver a fixed wireless solution with fibre backhaul to provide coverage and minimum 100Mbps broadband, and up to 1Gbps, to businesses and residents of these towns. QCN Fibre’s chief executive officer, Derek Merdith, said the company was committed to bridging the connectivity gap in regional communities.
