Wrong. For as long as there has been a union, there has been disunion. Controversies have engulfed national elections. Tensions have flared, candidates have seethed, voters have raged. In terms of divisiveness and bitterness, we can identify several eras in U.S. history that are comparable to today’s political atmosphere. Some were even worse. Ahead of the presidential inauguration, we asked three experts to provide some historical perspective on America’s splintered past. “In a country as diverse as the United States, you’re always going to have divisions,” said John Green, director emeritus of the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron. “You’re never going to get everybody on the same page, and maybe that’s healthy at some level to have disagreement and debate and division.”
