Lafayette Police announce junior academy for local kids KATC photo and last updated 2021-05-25 12:51:50-04 The Lafayette Police Department is offering two Junior Police Academy events this summer. The first, in June, is designed for kids ages 10 to 12. The second, in July, is for kids ages 13 to 15. The week long programs are aimed to increase youth awareness and confidence, relationship building, learning different aspects of law enforcement, and to create a better understanding between youth and police through education and a fun learning experience, a social post by the agency states. The program is free. The June program will run June 21 through 25, from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. each day at the police station on University.

Shooting in east Lafayette leaves 43-year-old dead, one injured One person was killed and another injured after a shooting on East Simcoe Street.  Lafayette police officers were called at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday to shots fired in the 1800 block of East Simcoe Street. When they arrived, officers found a man, later identified as 43-year-old Robert Hebert, who had been shot, according to a release from department spokesperson Sr. Cpl. Bridgette Dugas.  Hebert was taken to a local hospital where he later died. Officers were told about a second person, likely a bystander, who also was shot. That person was taken to a local hospital by someone before officers arrived. The victim suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was later released from the hospital, Dugas said.

Man accused of killing teen in overnight shooting in Lafayette KATC and last updated 2021-05-19 13:52:57-04 A 22-year-old man is accused of shooting and killing a teen overnight in Lafayette. On May 19, 2021, at 2:00 am, Lafayette Police responded to shots fired in the 1700 block of Eraste Landry Road, according to Cpl. Bridgette Dugas, spokesperson for the Lafayette Police Department. Officers located a 16-year-old boy in the yard of a residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The suspect, 22-year-old Igor Fernando Castellanos Tejada was located on a traffic stop shortly after the shooting.
