Chilled food body helps battle Brexit export red tape

The Chilled Food Association (CFA) is supporting vets battling the rising tide of costly red tape needed to allow Great Britain to transport short shelf-life composite foods of animal origin into the EU. A CFA survey of chilled and frozen composite products estimated that 30,000 Export Health Certificates (EHCs) would be required where none were before. According to Animal and Plant Health (APHA) data provided to the industry, there was a 126-fold increase in the total number of EHCs for EU export issued in January/February 2021 compared with the same period last year. The number rose from 491 in that period in 2020 to 61,802 in 2021. Before Brexit, GB was part of the EU trading bloc, so such validation was not needed.

Pig sector calls for £3 2m government aid package

Pig sector calls for £3.2m government aid package >More in © Tim Scrivener The pig sector has requested £3.2m in government support to compensate farmers for poor prices and lost trade due to Brexit, Covid-19 and African swine fever (ASF). The package was formally requested by the National Pig Association (NPA), which has been engaged in weekly crisis meetings with Defra and supply chain bodies since February. Supply chain representatives had initially wished to avoid calling for government backing, instead pinning hopes on marketing initiatives to bolster incomes. However, marketing drives such as price cuts and promotions have failed to tackle the depth of hardship being encountered on farms. More than 75% of farmers are operating at a loss of about £25 a pig, according to the NPA.

English pig producers call for £3 2m Covid support package

English pig producers call for £3.2m Covid support package 5 April 2021 | The National Pig Association and numerous processors have called for a £3.2m compensation package The English pig sector has called for a £3.2 million Covid support package to recognise the impact of overweight pigs on producers businesses. The request, by the National Pig Association (NPA) and processors, follows similar schemes in Scotland and NI that reflect Covid-related losses suffered by producers. The UK pig industry has been hit financially on two main fronts by the wave of outbreaks in pork plants. Higher carcase weights as a result of the backlog of pigs that has built up has led to price deductions being imposed by processors.
