Alan Gow delighted by depth of BTCC field
23 hours ago
British Touring Car Championship chief executive Alan Gow has admitted his delight at the strong field that has come together for the 2021 season.
The series will feature a capacity grid of 29 cars despite the ongoing issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with no fewer than eleven brand new cars having been built across the winter That includes the new Cupra Leon, which debuts in the hands of Team HARD.
Despite the departure of Honda, three manufacturer/constructor teams will still feature after Motorbase elected to lodge a constructor entry alongside WSR/BMW and Speedworks/Toyotam whilst the return to the grid of both Gordon Shedden and Jason Plato means four former champions will be featured.
The face behind the plans is Isle of Wight resident James Kaye. He is a two-time winner of the British Touring Car Championship (1992 and 1994) and has had a long career in motor racing, driving for Honda, Toyoa and Volkswagen. Mr Kaye wants to bring international motorcycle racing to closed public roads on the Island. On the new website, which includes an FAQ (and a chance for Islanders to ask questions), Mr Kaye said: “I firmly believe that the benefits to the Island will far outweigh any temporary inconvenience. My organising team is determined to place the Isle of Wight on to the international motor sport map.”

Most American racing fans have never tuned in to the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). That s a damned shame. Because BTCC s brand of door-banging, paint-scraping, hell-for-leather mania seems tailor made for our widescreens. Even more, the BTCC s production-based cars have always allowed Britons to stare out a kitchen window, sun setting on their
Empire family sedan, revealing a silhouette nearly identical to a racing car. Few race series on earth understand that charm anymore, the affirmation and connection it lends to fans.
