Deciphering SARS-CoV-2 Transmission With Serology Surveillance

Personal protective equipment (PPE) distribution based on predicted demand Changes in travel restrictions   Immunologic Testing for COVID-19 Preventive measures, accurate disease diagnostics and effective contact tracing are still considered fundamental in efforts to combat the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Immunologic tests can be performed under common clinical settings and the results are available in a matter of hours, which significantly expedites diagnostic practices. Also, the lag between data collection and reporting is a major challenge, explains Jill Foster, professor in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immun

Duke Research Shows In-Person Learning Is Safe With Low Virus Transmission

Duke Research Shows In-Person Learning Is Safe With Low Virus Transmission     Recent research from Duke University shows in-person learning can resume safely and proper mitigation measures can lower and prevent transmission in school settings. Amid the local districts’ preparations for students to return to the classroom, there are some concerns about teachers being vaccinated prior to in-person instruction as the waitlist for a vaccine continues to grow. Currently, healthcare workers and those over the age of 65 are eligible to be vaccinated under Groups 1 and 2. The beginning of Group 3 of vaccinations for educators in PreK through 12 schools starts February 24. While some people may be worried about receiving a vaccine prior to in-person instruction, others say it’s not the primary concern among some educators. Kristen Stephens, an associate professor of education at Duke, said some of the concern is actually about the form of instruction for their school district.

Vaccine wait is longer for children

In the fall, Amelie would return to school for the first time since the start of the pandemic. But when Gueorguieva, a World Bank senior economist who lives in the District of Columbia, asked her doctor when children in D.C. would be immunized, she learned that there are no vaccines yet available for kids her daughter s age, and none on the horizon.

Viral ExoN regulates the rate of recombination in SARS-CoV-2

Viral ExoN regulates the rate of recombination in SARS-CoV-2 Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston have discovered what may be the Achilles heel of the coronavirus, a finding that may help close the door on COVID-19 and possibly head off future pandemics. The coronavirus is an RNA virus that has, in its enzymatic toolkit, a proofreading exoribonuclease, called nsp14-ExoN, which can correct errors in the RNA sequence that occur during replication, when copies of the virus are generated. Using cutting-edge technologies and novel bioinformatics approaches, the researchers discovered that this ExoN also regulates the rate of recombination, the ability of the coronavirus to shuffle parts of its genome and even pull in genetic material from other viral strains while it replicates in order to gain evolutionary advantage.
