VSP: Rape suspect charged with obstruction of justice 30 years later

Wed, 06/30/2021 - 5:16pm tim Vermont State Police Following a lengthy investigation, the Vermont State Police has cited Leonard Forte, 79, of LaBelle, Florida, on suspicion of two counts of obstruction of justice. The charges arise from an ongoing criminal prosecution related to allegations that Forte raped a young girl more than 30 years ago in Vermont. Forte, who was described as a former law enforcement officer with the New York Suffolk County District Attorney s Office, was convicted by a Vermont jury in 1988 of three counts of rape of a 12-year-old girl. Forte appealed his conviction, and a motion for a new trial was granted in 1989.

Wed, 05/19/2021 - 3:12pm tim Vermont State Police Following a three-month investigation, the Vermont State Police has identified two suspects in connection with the Feb. 13, 2021, armed robbery at Spear’s Corner Store and cited them to appear in court this week. Andrew Coyle, 29, of Ferrisburgh was cited on suspicion of assault and robbery, and aggravated assault. His fiancée, Marissa Tallman, 26, also of Ferrisburgh, was cited on a count of accessory aiding in the commission of a felony. Through extensive investigation and multiple interviews, state police learned that Coyle entered Spear’s Corner Store at about 6:20 p.m. Feb. 13 with a BB-type gun, threatened the clerk and demanded money from the register. Police also learned that Tallman acted as the getaway driver.

Assault suspect Harley Breer surrenders to Vermont State Police

Tue, 04/13/2021 - 3:06pm tim Vermont Business Magazine The Attorney General’s Office today announced Mark Schwartz, 32, of Cambridge, Vermont, was arraigned in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in St. Albans on one count of Simple Assault. Mark Schwartz, a former officer with the St. Albans City Police Department, is accused of simple assault arising from an on-duty incident that occurred on February 28, 2019 involving use of a taser. During the arraignment, Mr. Schwartz entered a plea of Not Guilty. Superior Court Judge Michael Kupersmith presided over the arraignment. The Court released Mr. Schwartz on conditions that he attend all court hearings when told to, inform the court and his attorney of his current contact information, and that he may not have contact with or harass the alleged victim.
