High school students from Freer and Premont ISDs received their white coats and pins during a ceremony Wednesday for pursuing healthcare training at Del Mar College.
As part of the Rural Schools Innovation Zone (RSIZ) initiative, which includes the Next Generation Medical Academy, 12 students from Freer High School and six from Premont High School have completed Del Mar College Health Sciences’ 64-hour Electrocardiography (EKG) Program through the DMC Continuing Education & Off-Campus Programs Division.
The RSIZ includes Brooks County, Freer and Premont ISDs and Del Mar College. The Next Generation Medical Academy prepares students for college and careers with a focus in health science such as a certified nurse assistant, patient care technician or a licensed vocational or registered nurse.

PREMONT, Texas Premont Independent School District Superintendent Steve VanMatre said the district is ready to get to work on renovations to the high school after voters approved a $4.1 million bond proposal.
Voters passed the bond to renovate Premont Collegiate High School. It was built in 1971 and the superintendent there said those bond dollars will be used for major security upgrades at the high school, as well as renovation of the classrooms and bathrooms.

School leaders say the $4.1 million proposal would allow for some much-needed improvements to classrooms, bathrooms and the schoolâs band hall.
It would also add enhancements for security needs. We re convinced that $4.1 million, even though it is not enough, it will make a big dent in moving forward,â said Premont Superintendent Steve VanMatre.
Early voting runs through April 27 and election day will be on May 1.

PREMONT, Texas â On Thursday, Premont Independent School District was named one of five finalists by the United States Department of Education for its Rural Tech Project program.
As a finalist, the district will receive a $100,000 grant towards the program, and compete against schools from California, Kentucky, Michigan, and Virginia for another $100,000 grant.
âItâs great recognition for the work our people and our kids have done. Itâs an affirmation of our programming, that weâre able to offer such a wide menu of opportunities for kids that go to a rural high school,â said Premont superintendent Steve VanMatre.
