Weekender: Quartet Plays Brahms; Regional Museums Open and Exhibiting

First, a few words about William Wiley Before we plow into the weekend s (and next week s) great art events, I would like to take a moment to remember first-generation UC Davis art faculty William Wiley. Some of my most fun and interesting days at the UC Davis campus were spent with Wiley. Today, the San Francisco Chronicle published his obituary, which does a great job telling his life story from his days before UC Davis, at UC Davis, and after UC Davis. He was 83, passing away this week after battling Parkinson s disease. There will be more on Wiley later.

Belle: King of Serpents Review

What They Say: Great evil has been slipping into the Grimm Universe over the last few months, and no corner is safe from its insurgence. Belle is about to discover this firsthand as she comes face-to-face with one of the most vicious and deadly creatures in existence: The King of Serpents! Content (please note that portions of review may contain spoilers) : As Belle spends the evening pacifying a pack of harpies with ever-helpful companion Mel prattling on in her ear, the mocking remarks which keep her centered on the task at hand wonders how DiMarco can treat this conflict so casually, even as the colorful comments voice some concern in being outnumbered like so many times before. Distributed by Paul Holberton Publishing. LONDON .- This beautifully illustrated book is the first in-depth investigation of the relationship between two of the greatest 18th-century American artists, Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley. West and Copley have always and properly been viewed as the two greatest eighteenth-century American artists, despite the fact that, at the age of twenty-one, West left his native shores in 1760, never to return. He went on to become immensely successful in England, becoming, among other things, the second president of the Royal Academy of Arts. Copley spent half his working life also in England. However, before making the move across the Atlantic, he made his mark as an exceptionally talented artist, w
