Major Averages Holding On To Modest Gains In Early Afternoon Trading
WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Buying interest has waned from earlier in the session, but stocks remain mostly positive in early afternoon trading on Thursday. With the upward move, the major averages are adding to the gains posted in the previous session.
Currently, the major averages are holding on to modest gains. The Dow is up 151.17 points or 0.4 percent at 34,474.22, the Nasdaq is up 28.01 points or 0.2 percent at 13,766.00 and the S&P 500 is up 13.66 points or 0.3 percent at 4,209.65.
The strength on Wall Street may partly reflect continued optimism about the economy after the Labor Department released a report showing weekly jobless claims once again fell to a new pandemic-era low.

U.S. Stocks Remain Mostly Higher In Mid-Day Trading
WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Following the modestly lower close seen in the previous session, stocks have moved mostly higher during trading on Wednesday. The major averages have all moved to the upside, although the tech-heavy Nasdaq is outperforming its counterparts.
Currently, the major averages all remain in positive territory. While the Nasdaq is up 83.25 points or 0.6 percent at 13,740.43, the Dow is up 70.61 points or 0.2 percent at 34,383.07 and the S&P 500 is up 11.57 points or 0.3 percent at 4,199.70.
The strength on Wall Street may partly reflect continued economic optimism as the country continues to reopen following the coronavirus pandemic.
U.S. Stocks Finish Choppy Trading Session Modestly Lower
WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Stocks moved to the upside early in the trading day on Tuesday but failed to sustain the advance and showed a lack of direction over the course of the session. The major averages spent much of the day lingering near the unchanged line.
The major averages eventually ended the session modestly lower. The Dow dipped 81.52 points or 0.2 percent to 34,312.46, the Nasdaq edged down 4.00 points or less than a tenth of a percent to 13,657.17 and the S&P 500 slipped 8.92 points or 0.2 percent to 4,188.13
The early strength on Wall Street came amid a continued pullback by treasury yields, with the yield on the benchmark ten-year note falling below 1.6 percent.
