More than 50 women community leaders and activists gathered in front of Philadelphia City Hall Wednesday evening, wearing red and holding roses to commemorate loved ones they’ve lost in shootings.
They were the second group this week calling on Mayor Jim Kenney to do more to address violence in the city, which is on pace to break a record number of homicides this year.

Two organizations representing Philadelphia’s Black and Latino police officers and first responders announced their endorsement of District Attorney Larry Krasner.
Support from Guardian Civic League and Club Valiants comes as unions for the city’s police officers and firefighters back Krasner’s challenger Carlos Vega.
Police union leader John McNesby and other Krasner opponents blame his progressive approach to criminal justice for the city’s gun violence crisis.

After a year’s hiatus due to the pandemic, the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office has resumed sales of properties that were foreclosed-on, moving from in-person auctions conducted in a rented West Philadelphia conference room to an online vendor named Bid4Assets, based in Silver Springs, Md.
Sheriff Rochelle Bilal says the auctions are safe, convenient and cost-effective, which will benefit the sellers property owners who couldn’t keep up with tax payments or their mortgages.

A top aide to new Philadelphia Sheriff Rochelle Bilal said he was fired and escorted out of the office by armed deputies after raising concerns about controversial spending practices that have dogged the agency for years.
Brett Mandel, who lasted just five weeks as Bilal’s chief financial officer, said her first order of business was to continue spending with little budgetary planning or oversight. She spent out of a multimillion-dollar fund of money from fees collected by the office for sheriff’s sales, serving writs, and other duties, Mandel said, describing it as a “slush fund.”
