+ January 10, 2021 PHILIPPINE Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) Director Marlita Carlos said the recently commercialized plant growth promoter of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is effective in helping rice crops resist tungro disease and leaf blight.
Carrageenan Plant Growth Promoter (PGP), which the DOST had been promoting for farming applications after it was proven to be compatible with different cropping systems, helps develop rice resistance against rice tungro virus and bacterial leaf blight.
Rice tungro disease is caused by the combination of two viruses, which are transmitted by leafhoppers. It causes leaf discoloration, stunted growth, reduced tiller numbers and sterile or partly filled grains.

FOOD IRRADIATION has been included in the government’s list of preferred investment activities eligible for tax breaks, the Board of Investments (BoI) said.
In memorandum circular 2020-018 signed Dec. 4, the BoI said it is amending guidelines under the 2017 Investment Priorities Plan as part of an overall effort to retain and create jobs during the public health crisis.
“The board recognizes the significance of private sector investments in commercial food irradiation facilities as a support service for the country’s agriculture sector in mitigating post-harvest losses and increasing the sector’s supply value chain,” the BoI said.

Let us be on guard. The PNRI needs to investigate the source of this radioactive material further, as this might be from nuclear-powered warships patrolling the area, she said in a statement. Alam natin na ang Tsina at Amerika ay nagpapatrol sa WPS. The tension between the US and China poses a serious threat to security and peace in the Philippines and the ASEAN region. We must not allow the WPS to become a battleground of these great powers, she added.
