Hospitals in tight financial spot due to unpaid PhilHealth claims, says group

BusinessWorld May 19, 2021 | 9:15 pm THE PHILIPPINE Hospital Association on Wednesday said members are in a tight financial spot due to unpaid claims from the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) for coronavirus patients since the start of the pandemic. “This is now causing severe financial distress to private hospitals as well as the government hospitals,” the association’s president, Jaime A. Almora, told a Senate economic affairs committee hearing on the status of government measures for industries hit hard by the pandemic. Mr. Almora did not give an estimated total amount of the receivables from PhilHealth, but he cited one hospital with a P1.2 billion claim, while others ranging between P50 million to P700 million.

DOH updates guidelines for management of COVID-19 vaccine side effects

By JULIA MARI ORNEDO, GMA News Published May 7, 2021 2:25pm The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday said guidelines for the management of COVID-19 vaccine side effects have been updated as it announced the official resumption of AstraZeneca vaccination for people younger than 60. The DOH approved earlier this month the recommendation to resume the use of the AstraZeneca jab on people under 60 after it was suspended due to concerns on possible blood clotting with low platelet count. The condition, called vaccine-induced thrombosis and thrombocytopenia (VITT), is a “very rare condition” that can occur four to 28 days after getting a viral vector vaccine like AstraZeneca, the DOH explained.

Philippine Heart Center incurs P180-M deficit in 2020 as revenues nearly halved

CABUENAS, GMA News Published May 2, 2021 9:00pm The Philippine Heart Center (PHC) saw its bottom line fall by 133% in 2020 as its revenues were nearly halved during the year, according to a report by the Commission on Audit (COA). Data released by the COA showed that the PHC incurred a P180.281-million deficit last year versus the P544.578-million surplus in 2019. Revenues for the year were slashed by 49.04% to P1.600 billion from P3.140 billion in 2019, while operating expenses fell 18.78% to P3.233 billion from P3.981 billion. The PHC is a Level 4 government-owned and controlled corporation (GOCC) specialty hospital accredited by the Department of Health (DOH) and other regulatory agencies.

PAGCOR Q1 net profit plunges 80% as restrictions continue

The government-owned and -controlled corporation, which is required by law to remit 50% of its profits to the National Government, remitted P3.96 billion to the Treasury. The dividend paid to the government was roughly half of the P8.2 billion it remitted a year earlier. Excluding gaming taxes and its contributions to the National Government, net gaming revenue was P4.535 billion, down 48.9% from a year earlier. Expenses fell 13.75% year on year to P4.383 billion in the three months to March. PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Andrea D. Domingo, at a forum Tuesday, attributed the performance to the continuing restrictions, with casinos and other gaming establishments forced to limit their operations or shut down entirely.
