HARAP: Promoting harm reduction as part of PH public health policy

Published December 20, 2020, 3:01 PM Groups advocating awareness and acceptance of harm reduction by society have come together under one umbrella organization to promote the adoption of harm reduction strategies by the Philippine government. Harm reduction is a public health strategy that was developed initially for adults with substance abuse problems for whom abstinence was not feasible. These include using a nicotine patch instead of smoking, consuming water while drinking alcohol, using substances in a safe environment with someone they trust, and needle exchange programs for people who inject drugs. Experts back health warning for vape products Mayen Jaymalin © VapeClubMY via Unsplash Experts back health warning for vape products MANILA, Philippines Experts have given their full backing for the placement of health warnings for smoke-free products, such as e-cigarettes and vapes, but insisted that this should be based on risks and scientific evidence. “By all means, health warnings should be placed on e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HTPs) as the laws and regulations mandate, but these should be proportionate to the risk of these smoke-free products,” National University of Singapore professor Tikki Pangestu said. In a speech during the recently held 2nd Philippine Harm Reduction Online Forum, Pangestu said health warnings on combustible cigarettes packs should not be the same as those on packaging of e-cigarettes and HTPs.
